- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed to 110°F
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- Zest of 1 lemon
- 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon milk (for glaze)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix well.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the warmed milk, melted butter, egg, lemon zest, and lemon juice.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Roll the dough out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
- Spread a thin layer of melted butter over the dough, then sprinkle with sugar and a little more lemon zest if desired.
- Roll the dough tightly into a log and cut into 1-inch pieces.
- Place the rolls in a greased baking dish and let them rise for an additional 15 minutes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- While the rolls are baking, mix the powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon of milk to create a glaze.
- Once the rolls are done, drizzle the glaze over them while they are still warm.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to the dough.
- Try adding poppy seeds to the filling for a delightful crunch.
