Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty, about 3/4 inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent them from puffing up while cooking.
Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on one side, then flip and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes for medium doneness. Adjust cooking time according to your preferred doneness.
If using cheese, place a slice on each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt.
Remove the burgers from the heat and let them rest for a few minutes before serving.
