Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla extract together until creamy and smooth.
Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, stirring until just combined.
Fold in the chocolate chips and nuts (if using) until evenly distributed.
Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until the edges are golden brown. The centers may look slightly underbaked; they will continue to cook on the baking sheet.
Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
