Ingredients

For the Meat Mixture
  • 1 pound Ground Beef You can use leaner ground beef for a healthier option.
  • 1 pound Ground Hot Sausage Swap it for mild sausage if you prefer less heat.
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce Soy sauce can be a great substitute for a different flavor profile.
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Oregano Italian seasoning can serve as an excellent substitute.
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Salt Feel free to use fresh garlic or garlic powder instead.
  • 1 teaspoon Regular Salt
For the Topping
  • 8 ounces Velveeta You can use cream cheese or shredded cheddar; just expect some texture changes.
  • 2 tablespoons Chopped Parsley Optional garnish.
For the Base
  • 1 loaf Party Rye Bread Pumpernickel or other types of bread can be fantastic alternatives.

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • cutting board
  • knife
  • Baking sheet

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large skillet, heat over medium heat and add the ground beef along with the ground hot sausage. Cook for about 8-10 minutes until browned.
  2. While the meat is browning, cube the Velveeta cheese into smaller pieces and set aside.
  3. Once the meat mixture is cooked, drain excess grease using a colander.
  4. Return the skillet to low heat, add the cubed Velveeta, and stir until melted. Mix in Worcestershire sauce, oregano, garlic salt, and salt.
  5. Preheat your broiler to high and line a baking sheet with slices of party rye bread.
  6. Portion about 2 tablespoons of the meat mixture onto each slice of rye bread.
  7. Broil the assembled appetizers for 2-3 minutes until bubbly and lightly browned.
  8. Remove from the oven and optionally sprinkle with chopped parsley before serving.

Notes

For best results, monitor the appetizers closely while broiling to prevent burning. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
