Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk warmed to 110°F
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 large egg
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk for glaze

Method
 

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix well.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the warmed milk, melted butter, egg, lemon zest, and lemon juice.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  7. Roll the dough out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  8. Spread a thin layer of melted butter over the dough, then sprinkle with sugar and a little more lemon zest if desired.
  9. Roll the dough tightly into a log and cut into 1-inch pieces.
  10. Place the rolls in a greased baking dish and let them rise for an additional 15 minutes.
  11. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  12. While the rolls are baking, mix the powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon of milk to create a glaze.
  13. Once the rolls are done, drizzle the glaze over them while they are still warm.
