Ingredients

  • 1 pound Breakfast Sausage Choose mild, maple, or spicy varieties.
  • 2 cups Frozen Shredded Hash Browns Thaw before use.
  • 1 medium Finely Chopped Onion Can substitute with shallots.
  • 1 cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese Monterey Jack or pepper jack can be used.
  • 1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour Use gluten-free flour as a substitute.
  • 2 large Eggs Egg replacer for a vegan option.
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder Fresh minced garlic can be swapped.

For Frying
  • 2 cups Vegetable Oil Heat to 350°F for frying.

Method
 

Directions
  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, crumble the breakfast sausage and cook until browned, about 7-10 minutes. Drain excess grease and set aside to cool slightly.
  2. Add finely chopped onion to the skillet with a tablespoon of sausage drippings. Sauté until soft, about 3-5 minutes.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine cooked sausage and onion with thawed hash browns, cheddar cheese, flour, eggs, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly.
  4. Form small balls or patties from the mixture and place on a greased baking sheet.
  5. Chill formed appetizers in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
  6. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat to 350°F.
  7. Fry a few appetizers at a time for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  8. Use a slotted spoon to transfer fried appetizers to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  9. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauces and garnish with chopped green onions.
