Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line 2-3 baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Cream together 14 oz of softened butter and white sugar until fluffy, about 3-5 minutes. Add 2 eggs, 2 tsp vanilla, 1 tsp almond extract, and optional zest. Gradually incorporate 6 cups of flour until blended.
  3. Roll out the dough to 1/4-inch thickness on a floured surface. Cut shapes with festive cookie cutters and transfer to prepared baking sheets.
  4. Chill the baking sheets with cut cookies in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes.
  5. Bake cookies in the oven for 10-12 minutes or until edges are lightly golden.
  6. Allow cookies to cool completely on a wire rack before decorating.
  7. Whisk together 6 tbsp meringue powder, 2 tsp lemon juice, and 8 tbsp water, then gradually add 7 cups powdered sugar until glossy.
